Steve's PT Session - The Plank
Steven Holmes, Personal Training, demonstrates one of the best Ab Exercises Ever!
Added:Sun, 8th November 09
Ranked number 4 in terms of overall effectiveness for the oblique muscle group, this exercise not only works your abdominal muscles, but also works on the whole core! It beats the traditional ab crunch, which ranks as number 11!
1
Start by lying face down on the ground
2
Place your elbows and forearms underneath your chest, with your elbows lined up with your shoulders
3
Prop yourself up to form a bridge using your toes and forearms
4
Maintain a flat back with your hips in line with your shoulders. Do not allow your hips to sag towards the ground.
Hold this position focusing on tightening your abs - trying to pull them up toward your spine - until you can no longer maintain a flat bridge.
For beginners, start with a hold for 10 seconds, gradually increasing to 60 seconds.
Repeat 3-4 times.
Quick Tip!
It is really important to remember to breath whilst holding the position!
