New Year's Resolutions - Create a Dream to Make It Last

How many times have you made the same resolution and failed? Find out why.....and make this year's resolution last forever!

Are you planning to make New Year resolutions in January? Did you do the same thing last year? Did you succeed? Probably not!

Anywhere between 50 – 75% of us make a resolution – often the same one year after year - but less than 10% succeed. The majority of New Year Resolutions are forgotten before the end of January! Do you ever wonder why?

Well here is a bit of psychology for you. Most New Year Resolutions are based on something negative – a habit or situation that you want to end. Iit is difficult to get motivated from a negative start! It is extremely difficult to get excited about weight loss or giving up smoking – after all we associate it with deprivation – of not being able to do something! Because the start point comes from negative feelings, the whole process becomes a chore and almost a punishment for not having done the right thing in the first place.

So let´s turn it around and make it come true in 2010! Just follow these simple tips

Most Popular Resolution – Weight loss!

So many people have the wrong attitude about weight loss. They look at themselves in the mirror and see themselves now – negative thinking and negative feelings about how you look. So create a different dream.

• Make it a goal much bigger than just losing weight
• Create a dream in your own mind about living a healthier lifestyle

• Think about what it would feel like to be in good physical shape – to be able to do some of the things that you currently struggle with or to eliminate some of your health problems that are a constraint on your daily living
• Fall in love with the idea of being more mobile, being able to go out again to buy size 12 clothes, being able to walk up and down the stairs without getting breathless, or simply that your husband notices you again.

• Make a list of 10 things that you want to be different about your lifestyle or health
• Draw some images of yourself doing these things and put them up on your fridge to constantly remind yourself of your dream
• Then start to act and think like a person who lives a healthy lifestyle –make your own plan and stick to it

Second Most Popular Resolution – Getting More Exercise?

So many people have the wrong attitude about making changes concerning exercise – they know they should do it, but it is seen as a punishment for overeating, time consuming, boring, and so on. So create a different dream

• Create a goal much bigger that doing more exercise – think about it as a improving the quality of your life
• Create a dream about taking a break from a stressful day at work, or what it would feel like to have more energy and a positive outlook

• Again, think about what it would feel like to be in good physical shape, to reduce your blood pressure and cholesterol so you don’t need to keep going to the doctor, or to be free of medication.
• Dream about being able to go dancing again, go sailing, or to be able to play sports with your grandchildren

• Make a list of all of the ways that your daily living could be improved if you were more active
• Build your own dream of how life could be different – of all the things you could do
• Then start to act and think like a person who lives that new life – make your own plan and stick to it

Third most popular New Resolution – giving up smoking?

• Create a goal much bigger than giving up smoking

• Fall in love with the idea of not having that smoker’s cough, or being able to breathe clean air, or of your body and clothes smelling nice all of the time.
• Dream about how nice it would be to taste your food properly again

• Think and dream of what it would be like to be a non-smoker, to live longer, to see your grandchildren grow up
• Then think and act like a person who does not smoke – make your own plan and stick to it.

This positive thinking creates an environment in which you will become motivated to succeed - to hold onto your dream even when the road gets tough!
