Get the Footwear Right with New Balance
Finding the right running shoe can be very difficult. There are so many things to take into consideration. The Famouslyfit.com team put New Balance Trainers through their paces...........
Finding the right running shoe can be very difficult. There are so many things to take into consideration, including the correct width fitting, finding out whether you run inwards/outwards (over-pronation or pronation), the height of your instep and so on. Everyone has very different biomechanics and I’m possibly the world’s worst when it comes to trainers - my feet are wide yet quite small.
So when New Balance approached Famously Fit and asked myself, Ann Mather - Executive Editor, Lee Latchford Evans and Amy Guy to try their trainers out, I was intrigued to see how we would all get on!

On average I tend to run anything from 1 mile up to 3 and many trainers grip the sides of my feet, so I was keen to try these out. All I can say is that after wearing them for nearly 3 weeks, they really are one of the comfiest trainers I’ve ran in.
I also wear them for when I go on bike rides, exercising with weights, lunges, squats and whilst doing various classes at the gym. Again, they feel very comfortable. My feet do not ache and the laces are ‘sure lace’ (secure laces adding midfoot support) so they have never once came undone.
Not only are they extremely comfortable, I really loved the blue and white combo - very stylish and easy on the eye.
All in all I would give these trainers 10 out of 10! Perfect!
Ann´s Trainers
Ann tried a very different approach (and it’s fair to say I’m very jealous of Ann´s gorgeous views that are right on her doorstep!!)
Here’s what Ann said:
I knew that my other colleagues at Famouslyfit would probably test out their New Balance trainers either road running or treadmill running so I thought I would give mine a different kind of test – although maybe not what they were designed for.
Our route took us up the left hand side of the left peak, over the back, and along a flat ridge to the right hand peak where we climbed to the top point. Here there is an ancient look out station (just a pile of rocks now really) and a Spanish flag flapping in the breeze.
Whilst the New Balance Trainers were not designed for hiking or mountaineering – therefore did not have high ankle supports – they nonetheless did offer a lot of support to the main part of the foot. The extra cushioning was a great help when scrambling over the lose shingle and rocks, and the lightweight fabric of the main shoe was absolutely fantastic. It allowed my feet to breath so they did not become sweaty which of course can cause rubbing and blistering. We were climbing in temperatures of 28°!
Obviously, if you are going on serious hiking ventures, it is imperative that you purchase and use the correct type of shoe or boot for maximum protection – especially of the vulnerable ankle joint – but for what we did, I found the New Balance Trainers to be extremely comfortable and offering sufficient support.

Lee has also been doing marathon rehab training in them. Unfortunately Lee has tendonosis in his left hip, so running to his full potential is out of the question, but steady interval training seems to be helping and Lee runs on and off over a 30 minute period and found the trainers helped ease the impact to his hip. Must be the clever N-ergy in the heel which is New Balance´s most advanced shock absorption and cushioning to date.
