H2O Did you know?

So you thought you knew everything about water, have we got a surprise for you!

  • Up to 75% of Americans and Western Europeans are clinically dehydrated
  • In up to 37% of Americans and Western Europeans, the thirst mechanism is so weak it is mistaken for hunger
  • Lack of water is the number 1 cause of daytime fatigue
  • Water is the main constituent of the body – it forms 50-60% of body weight and around 75% of volume. This depends on age, sex and body fat content
  • Water is the most important of the basic nutrients – the body requires it constantly and all of the important chemical reactions in the body can only take place in water
  • Drinking adequate amounts of water can decrease the risk of certain types of cancers, including colon cancer (by up to 45%), bladder cancer (by up to 50%) and breast cancer (by up to 79%)
  • For up to 80% of sufferers, drinking water can reduce joint and/or back pain
  • A person can live for about a month without food, but only a week without water
  • Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid – wherever it travels, water carries chemicals, minerals and nutrients with it
  • Water contains no fats, no proteins, no carbohydrates and therefore no calories
  • Water helps to maintain body weight by increasing metabolism and regulating appetite – even mild dehydration will slow down the metabolism by 3%
  • Water aids the digestion process and prevents constipation
  • Even in the absence of any visible perspiration, approximately half of water loss occurs through the operation of our lungs and skin
  • Simply breathing in and out uses a pint of water a day
  • Consuming sugary drinks, tea and coffee slows down the rate at which water can be absorbed from the stomach and prevents the water traveling to the necessary locations in the body
  • Drinking more water reduces water retention and helps the body flush it self clean of waste products and bacteria that can cause disease
  • Water is the drink of choice for protecting your teeth and gums
  • Pure water (solely hydrogen and oxygen atoms) has a neutral pH of 7 – it is neither acid or alkaline
  • The earth is a closed system – the same water that existed on the earth millions of years ago is still present today
