Karen is an experience nutritional therapist having been in practice for over 12 years but feels she is still the student as she keeps up-to-date with “evidence based “ nutritional medicine by attending several post graduate lectures throughout the year.

Her journey into nutrition began after the birth of her two children (now 18 and 21) who both developed various allergies and eczema. Karen noticed the direct affect the choice of food made on their health (positively or negatively). It was then that her studies into nutrition began.

With a combination of Nutritional Medicine and the older traditional naturopathic methods, Karen combines these approaches in her every day work. Along with her qualifications in bioregulatory medicine Karen uses a functional medicine approach which seeks to look at the underlying causes of ill health and diseases. In this way, she looks at factors that can upset our metabolic homeostasis and seeks to support this by using foods as a health modifier and/or using food concentrates which may help support optimal health.

One area that Karen is particularly interested in is biotransformation, in other words ‘detoxification’ as Karen understands the affect that modern day toxicity may have on the human body. She knows that the ‘toxic load’ may have a cumulative effect leading to fatigue, sluggishness, digestive issues, hormonal disruption, skin complaints, insomnia (and more) and may lead further to chronic diseases.

Karen’s keen interest in detoxification spans over 15 years as she has seen the profound affects that detoxification programmes can achieve. She has developed her own detox retreat programmes which are designed ‘to take you on a journey within’ as it focuses on not only the physical level but also the mind and emotional levels which through the nervous and hormonal system impact our physical wellbeing and upset our equilibrium.

As well as her regular clinic work and detox retreats Karen also facilities workshops, writes various topics on health and nutrition and has appeared on many tv series over the years, including recently BBC1 “The Last resort” shown in Northern Ireland.
