Beach Buff

As the summer holidays hit - whether sun-bathing in the garden or on the beach overseas make sure you body is beach buff with these simple exfoliation tips...

Exfoliating your skin has some brilliant benefits:

  • it gets your circulation and sloughs away dead skin cells, making skin appear brighter
  • it prevents in-grown hairs (fantastic if you’re a fan of waxing)
  • it leaves skin baby soft and smooth
  • the action of massaging skin helps lymphatic drainage and can improve the appear of cellulite.

There are lots of exfoliating methods including:

Dry skin body brushing

This is a great 2-minute daily skin-prep that delivers fab results in just a few days. Before you shower in the morning, brush dry skin with a dry body brush. Always brush skin in the direction of the heart and don’t brush skin too hard at first. Don’t body brush broken, cut or tender skin. Try Elemis’s Skin Brush (£17 each).

Exfoliating mitts

This is a good technique if you’re limited for time. Pop on exfoliating mitts in the shower, you may look like a mime artist and feel a bit silly, but no-one has to see you! Lather the mitts up with your favourite foamy shower gel and then wash your body using a circular motion in the direction of your heart. We love Soap & Glory Exfoliating Gloves (a snip at £4.89).

Salt scrub

Salt scrubs are a real luxury in the bathroom and they often have a delicious aroma. The salt is usually suspended in an oil which works to exfoliate skin and nourish it with oils to leave it silky smooth and soft. Salt scrubs are great for preventing in-grown hairs as they are gentle on skin (even sensitive areas). Elemis’s Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow (£35 for 410 grams) is divine.

Body Exfoliators

Many beauty brands have developed specialist body exfoliator products, and you can find, gel, foam or cream based scrubs to suit your preference, and you often get other benefits. Our favourite is Clarins Smoothing Body Scrub For A New Skin (£23 for 200ml), it’s a dual action product containing bamboo powders to exfoliate, smooth and soften skin, plus it works to firm skin - double whammy! Use it before applying a self-tan lotion for great results.
