Mr Wales or Mr World - What Does It Take?
Amy Guy has an exclusive interview with the new Mr. Wales - Andrew Western

Amy Guy -the female face of FamouslyFit.com - was a member of the judging panel last week for the prestigious titles of Miss and Mr Wales 2010. As a former Miss Wales title holder and Miss World Finalist Amy chatted to both winners in an exclusive interview for Famously Fit.
Meet Mr Wales 2010 – Andrew Western

I work full time as a Health and Safety Information Consultant for the Health and Safety Executive, and part time as a Bar Tender in the Travellers Rest on Caerphilly Mountain.
I studied for my GCSE and A Levels at Cardinal Newman Roman Catholic School, Pontypridd. I have recently furthered my studies and past my NEBOSH General certificate with distinction.
In the past I was selected by my school to take part in a voyage sailing from Dartmouth to San Marlo, France as part of the Tall Ships Youth Trust - a truly amazing experience that will live with me forever!
I was also shortlisted for the Specsavers spectacle wearer of the year competition and made it to the Welsh regional semi-finals….the funny thing is…I don’t even wear glasses, they were thrown on me by a model scout on a night out!
I have recently been part of a 17 member crew team in the Anthony Nolan Trust Dragon Boat Race, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff. As a team we managed to raise an astonishing £1,100 for this worthy cause supporting Leukaemia research and also finishing 7th out of 17!

What does wining the title of Miss/Mr Wales mean to you? And what does it mean to you to represent your country?

To represent my country is a great honour and privilege.
How did you prepare for the event in the weeks/months before hand?
Once I had made the finals I knew that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity which I wanted to make the most of. I decided to research into how I could make as much money as possible in such a short space of time for the Joshua Foundation.

Apart from that I did attempt a few cheeky catwalks and speeches in my living room. I was given a confidence boost for my speeches after my Ladies Night, as I was up presenting the night with my good friend Amanda Protheroe-Thomas.
What do you do to keep in shape and maintain your stage winning physique?
To be honest I think the trick to a healthy body has to start from a healthy mind. You have to set yourself goals and be very clear in what you want to achieve…actually I think goal setting is the key to success for me, as being able to track my success keeps me motivated.
I ensure that I am eating a well-balanced nutritional diet and I also find having a training partner very useful, particularly on those days when I feel like dodging those much needed gym sessions…find yourself a gym partner folks!!
Do you have a specific diet or nutritional plan that you follow? Please tell us about your eating habits (you can be honest! :)
During the competition I did stick to a training diet:
Breakfast Porridge
Snack Protein Shake
Lunch Chicken and rice or Tuna and Beans
Snack Protein Shake
Dinner White/red meat and a load of vegetables or salad
Favourite food Chinese
Least favourite food Sushi!!
Do you drink alcohol? If so how much?
I do like to have a drink with friends socially. This tends to be every weekend after a long week in work…usually a couple of pints or a bottle of cold wine!
Do you smoke?
Nope, I used to but quit when I was 19…never want to see another cigarette as long as I live!
Do you eat fast food? ie McDonalds/takeaway? If so how often?
I must be honest McDonalds doesn’t usually do it for me. However, I do like to have an occasional Chinese takeaway - maybe once a month - king prawns in satay sauce, egg fried rice and prawn toast!
What do you find attractive in a girl with regards to their physical appearance?
Well this question isn’t really for me…but I can give my opinion that a girl who is happy and confident in who she is, she is attractive to me. A girl who has a keen eye for fashion in the way they present themselves is also important.
Who do you look to as role models and why?
I think it would have to be David Beckham. He has shown that fame and fortune doesn’t take morals and good will away from you. He has continued to show support to people less fortunate than himself and has also strived to succeed in teaching younger children, boys and girls how to play the sport that he has a passion for. I think that in itself is inspiring enough.
What plans do you have for the coming 12 months during your reign? What would you like to achieve?
Firstly I am hosting this year’s Cardiff Wales Mardi Gras on September 4th. I am planning on organising a number of charity events for the Joshua Foundation, including sports stadium raids, pub raids, a charity Miss/Mister Wales Christmas ball, a Miss/Mister Wales Dragon Boat race. Taking the children from the Joshua foundation to Lapland at Christmas, competing at Mr World, and taking off to Australia to lead in some conservation work…so all in all a very busy 12 months!
